Acupuncture originated over 2000 years ago and is a healing system using Chinese Medicine theory of energy channels (meridians) in the body to improve well-being. These energy channels contain hundreds of specific points which, when very fine needles are inserted, activate the vital energy of the body, known as Qi. The needles are so fine that twenty of them can be inserted into a standard hypodermic needle used for vaccinations.
When the body is functioning well, there is a smooth flow of energy along these channels, but when unhealthy, this energy is disrupted. A good analogy is to think of a river silting up, disrupting the flow of water.
Disruptions to Qi can be caused by many things including disease, poor diet, overwork and fatigue, over- or under-exercising, emotional upsets, and psychological or physical trauma.
Acupuncture is a holistic system and looks at emotional and physical symptoms of disharmony in the body with the aim of restoring balance.
